Why are my curls suddenly frizzy? 8 common mistakes with curly hair

Your curls were beautifully defined yesterday, but today they suddenly look dry, dull, and frizzy. Sound familiar? Frizz is one of the most common challenges with curly hair. And it is not always due to your hair products.

Frizzy hair can have various causes. From a lack of hydration to the way you dry your hair or even how you sleep at night.

In this blog, we discuss 8 common curly hair mistakes and tell you what you can do to get your frizzy curls looking beautiful and defined again.

1. Your hair is insufficiently hydrated

Curly hair is naturally more prone to dryness. Because of the shape of the curl, natural oils cannot easily travel from the scalp to the ends.

When your hair lacks moisture, it can feel dry and frizzy.

What can you do?

Use a hydrating conditioner and add a hair mask to your routine when needed. Additionally, a leave-in conditioner can help provide extra care to your hair.

Note: if your hair becomes limp or feels greasy quickly, it might be that you are using too many or too heavy care products.

2. You are using too little styling product

Hydration alone is not always enough for long-lasting defined curls. Styling products help your curls hold their shape.

In particular, a product with sufficient hold, such as a gel or mousse, can help to limit frizz throughout the day.

Preferably apply styling products to wet or very damp hair. This allows you to distribute the product better and gives your curls the chance to form beautiful curl clumps.

3. You are actually using too much product

The opposite is just as common.

When you use multiple products in large quantities, your hair can become weighed down. Your curls lose their volume and can look dull or greasy.

Therefore, always start with a small amount. You can always add more later.

A good basic routine does not have to be complicated at all:

Leave-in → curl cream → gel

Depending on your hair, you may only need one or two of these products.

4. You are towel-drying your hair

A regular bath towel can cause quite a bit of friction. Especially when you rub your hair dry vigorously.

For curly hair, this can lead to more frizz and disrupt your natural curl pattern.

Instead, gently squeeze the excess water out of your hair. For example, use a microfiber towel or a soft T-shirt.

The goal is not to get your hair bone-dry, but to remove excess water without pulling your curls apart.

5. You touch your hair while it is drying

This is perhaps one of the most difficult habits to break.

While drying, your curls form into clumps. When you constantly run your hands through your hair, pull these clumps apart, or keep scrunching your hair, it can actually cause extra frizz.

Apply your products, form your curls, and then leave your hair alone as much as possible until it is completely dry.

Want more volume? Wait until your hair is completely dry and carefully loosen the roots.

6. You are using the wrong products for your hair type

Not every product works for every curl.

For example, a rich curl cream may work fantastically on thick, dry hair, but be too heavy for fine hair. Conversely, a light mousse may provide insufficient care for very dry or thick hair.

Therefore, look not only at your curl type but also at:

  • the thickness of your hair;

  • how dry your hair is;

  • how quickly your hair absorbs products;

  • how much volume you want;

  • how much hold you need.

It may take some time before you find the right combination.

7. You are not protecting your curls at night

You can have a perfect curl routine in the evening and still wake up with a frizzy head of hair in the morning.

That is often due to friction with your pillow.

A satin pillowcase or bonnet can help reduce this friction. You can also gather your hair loosely on top of your head, for example in a pineapple.

This often keeps your curls in better shape while sleeping.

8. You forget to refresh your curls

Curls do not need to be washed and fully styled again every day.

On the second or third day, your curls may lose some volume and definition. That does not mean you have to start all over again.

Lightly dampen your hair with water and apply a small amount of leave-in conditioner or styling product if necessary. Gently scrunch your curls back into shape and let them dry.

Start with a little product. You often need surprisingly little to breathe new life into your curls.

Why do curls actually get frizzy?

Frizz occurs when hair strands do not lie neatly in the same curl clump. Moisture deficiency, humidity, friction, damage, and a lack of hold can all play a role.

That is why there is no single solution for frizzy hair.

First ask yourself:

Are my curls dry?
→ Focus more on hydration and care.

Do my curls look good after styling, but do they frizz later in the day?
→ Look at your styling product and the amount of hold.

Do my curls become frizzy immediately after drying?
→ Pay attention to how you dry and how much you touch your hair.

Does your hair mostly get frizzy after sleeping?
→ Look at your night routine and reduce friction.

How to get more definition back in your curls

The good news: frizzy curls do not mean there is something 'wrong' with your hair.

Start with the basics:

Cleanse gently → hydrate → style on wet hair → ensure sufficient hold → let dry undisturbed → touch your hair as little as possible → protect your curls at night.

And perhaps most importantly: experiment. Every curl is different. What works perfectly for one person may be too heavy or too light for another.

With the right combination of care and styling, you can make your natural curl pattern look its best.
